|
The word gTribologyh is a coined term derived from gtribo,h a Greek word for grub.h It was first used in 1964 by Prof. H. Peter Jost in a report titled as gLubrication (Tribology)h (gThe Jost Reporth), which was submitted to Minister of State for Education and Science of UK in response to the ministerfs request to give an opinion on how to promote lubrication education, research and industry for the purpose of strengthening UKfs industrial competitiveness. The word has since been widely used with the meaning of the science and technology of friction, lubrication and wear. According to the glossary of the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development), Tribology is defined as "the science and technology of interacting surfaces in relative motion and of related subjects and practices." Narrowly defined, it is a branch of science concerned with the phenomena that occur on two contacting surfaces and the technology to control them, dealing with such key words as surface, contact, friction, wear, and lubrication. Because Tribology covers all phenomena that occur on two contacting solid surfaces, it is closely related not only to many industrial fields but also to medical (e.g. joints) and geological fields (e.g. earthquake and landslides). Dealing with such phenomena as contact, friction and wear between surfaces, Tribology is an interdisciplinary science that integrates various scientific fields including physics, chemistry, material mechanics, elastic-plastic mechanics, hydromechanics, thermal mechanics, medical science and biology, as well as knowledge of the field where Tribology is applied. |
